Crucifixion was considered so cruel and unusual that it could be used only for non-citizens and only for the most heinous crimes. Death could take for days, and it came from asphyxiation, accompanied by 42 deg C fever.
Unlike many elaborate and fantastic methods, the crucifixion is well documented and really used.
